The satellite toll system in Belgium applies to trucks with a total permissible weight of over 3.5 tonnes (does not apply to buses and cars). Every domestic or foreign truck weighing more than 3.5 tonnes on Belgian roads must have an OBU installed, from 1st April 2016.
The Belgian toll system includes a road network that is divided into 3 regions: Flanders – the predominantly Dutch northern part of Belgium, Brussels – the region covering the capital of Belgium and its surroundings and Wallonia – the predominantly French-speaking southern part of Belgium. Different tariffs apply to toll zones and all tolls are recorded by satellite. There is no VAT in Flanders and Brussels. VAT is applied in the Wallonia region.
